D.I.Y. Series-Easy and Natural Shaving Cream Recipe
Shaving can be tough on your skin. Besides the cuts and frequent nicks you can get, there are still harmful ingredients that most skincare companies still use in shaving creams and they won’t tell you about it. Shaving creams for women and men can be toxic and includes ingredients such as phthalates, fragrances, and triethanolamine, better known as TEA. Phthalates are chemicals used in plastics to increase softness of plastics. You can find them in most of your cosmetics to include shampoos and nail polish amongst others.
Triethanolamine is what binds the ingredients together and it also can be found in sunscreen. It’s not meant to be used on your skin long term because it causes allergic reactions, dry skin, and blisters. It also has been linked with forming cancer causing nitrates. The best way to ensure that your skin is safe and protected is to opt to use only natural products. Better moisture and hydration are positive benefits that can result from using natural shaving creams to address your problem areas. It also helps relive dry flaky skin and it’s a great remedy for exfoliating! Use this simple step ingredient list to create your perfect shaving cream:
The Shaving Process:
- It all begins with the right razor. A razor with multiple blades is a great razor to use because it limits your risk of ingrown hairs.
- Soften skin with a nice warm and moist towel; let the warm water sit on your skin for a minute or two to open the pores
- Exfoliate, Exfoliate, and Exfoliate!! Apply one of your favorite scrubs on your skin before shaving. This will help remove dead skin
- Apply the shaving cream
Here is what you will need:
1 razor of your choice
2/3 cups of coconut oil (if you are allergic to coconut, you can substitute with shea butter)
2/3 Shea Butter
1/4 cup of your favorite carrier oil (Jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil)
15 drops of your favorite essential oil
Directions:
Melt the coconut oil, carrier oil, and shea butter together in a small pot on low-medium heat. Stir it occasionally for better mixture. Remove from heat and add your essential oils. Pour in container and refrigerate until it hardens. Once it hardens, you can use your blender to whip it to make it airy, fluffy, and light! You can also steam your shower or place cream in a high temperature room to let it naturally melt.
